Is the Military Draft Unethical - 574 Words

A nation as a whole is only as strong as its military. It has been stated that, â€Å"in order to defend themselves from external threats, nations assemble militaries that are tasked with preserving national security†(Military Draft 1). The method chosen by United States to assemble a military force has been the subject of ethical debates since the introduction of the military draft in 1861, during the Civil War. Dictionary.com defines ethical as something, â€Å"being in accordance with the rules or standards for right conduct or practice†(1). A thorough investigation finds that there are three major ethical dilemmas that are often debated pertaining to the military draft. These dilemmas include the draft’s effect on civic pride, the disproportionate number of minorities, and the strength of the military. When the draft was first introduced, the government envisioned it as a way to instill a sense of civic pride in society. However, the citizens of the United St ates saw it as an intrusion on their rights. Widespread public opposition concerning the military draft was seen throughout the nation ranging from draftees refusing to report for duty, to the many large well-known protests. James Robbins states, â€Å"a conscripted military would not be more just; it would simply universalize injustice by removing individual choice from the equation†(qtd. in Military Draft 6). In The Skin Of A Lion Essay Example For Students

In The Skin Of A Lion Essay In the novel, In the Skin of a Lion, by Michael Ondaatje, the main character, Patrick Lewis, searches for identity and light. Without these elements, he lacks love and cannot survive the world. A passage in chapter three describes him as a lonely man that is isolated from the world around him. Clara and Ambrose and Alice and Temelcoff and Cato- this cluster made up a drama without him. And he himself was noting but a prism that refracted their lives. He searched out things, he collected things. He was an abashed man, an inheritance from his father. Born in Abashed, Ontario. What did the word mean? Something that suggested there was a terrible horizon in him beyond which he couldnt leap. Something hollow, so when alone, when not aligned with another- whether it was Ambrose or Clara or Alice- he could hear the rattle within that suggested a space between him and community. A gap of love, (Ondaatje, pg.157) suggests his feelings of separation from his close companions. Patrick Lewis is a lost soul and a searcher on a constant journey. In chapter three, ironically titled, The Searcher, Patrick is searching for Ambrose Small but that is merely a metaphor for his vocation. He searched out things, he collected things, (Ondaatje, pg.157) indicates that he is always searching for something. The title, In the Skin of a Lion, can also be used to illustrate Patricks perpetual search. In the preface, Ondaatje states, (T)he joyful will stoop I will wander through the wilderness in the skin of a lion. Patrick is wandering through the wilderness, searching and hunting. He has no purpose in life; he just searches. The thing that he is looking for is light. This ambiguous concept of light Ondaatje presents throughout the novel is not ordinary light, but one that illuminates the void of darkness. Just like the moths that Patrick is intrigued by that only tend toward light at night, Patrick only seeks light when there is none around him. Patrick continues his eternal search for li ght because he has none of his own to emit. The central theme behind many stories is the loss and regaining of identity. Patrick has no identity of his own, and his only way of gaining a temporary one is through light. And he himself was nothing but a prism that refracted their lives. (Ondaatje, pg.157) A prism, by definition, refracts light into a spectrum of colors. Correspondingly, Patrick contorts other characters identities as his own. The readers are introduced to this concept of reflecting light even before the novel begins. This is indicated by, (D)riving the four hours to Marmora under six stars and a moon. Patrick is the moon; he can only reflect a stars light. When reflecting light from the six stars, the main characters in the novel, Patrick is able to gain a temporary identity. This is what Patrick is searching for his true identity. Throughout the novel, Patrick becomes like the people he associates with, and he gains a temporary identity and purpose. He takes on Alices quest to dissolve the power of the rich by blowing up the Muskoka Hotel. He becomes a criminal like Caravaggio by breaking into the Waterworks. When Patrick is without light to reflect, he is without identity. When Clara leaves Patrick, he is thrust into a world of darkness. Only when Alice re-enters his life can he begin to have an identity again. Just like Alices story of several actresses sharing the animal pelt to tell the story, the characters in Patricks life become the focus of his life. When Patrick is without an identity and the light of other characters, he is also lacking love. Something hollow, so when alone, when not aligned with another- whether is was Ambrose or Clara or Alice he could hear the rattle within that suggested a space between him and community. A gap of love. (Ondaatje, pg.157). Only with love can anyone be expected to have identity and fit into a community. Hazin Lewis neglected this aspect in Patricks life. Without a motherly influence he never received the nurturing and encouragement he needed . This lack of love from his father, created Patrick to become an abashed man. When Patrick came to Toronto he tried to forget about his past, and tried to make a new beginning: Now, in the city, he was new even to himself, the past locked away. (Ondaatje, pg.157). As much as Patrick was trying to get away from his past, it engulfed his future. His past became him. He could not escape his lack of love as a child, and continually searched for it. Patricks life is like a train ride. He is confined to the train, meeting new and unique people as they get on and off. He talks with them and befriends them. But there is something essentially different from Patrick and the people whom he befriends. They all have purpose for riding the train, a destination they want to reach and eventually they get off and leave Patrick behind. Sometimes Patrick would like to go with them to their destination, but he cant. Patrick stays on the train ride, which is a reflection of his life, and looks for his stop and unknown destination. .u1bc2319c20af4d52eb3cc400d65003d5 , .u1bc2319c20af4d52eb3cc400d65003d5 .postImageUrl , .u1bc2319c20af4d52eb3cc400d65003d5 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u1bc2319c20af4d52eb3cc400d65003d5 , .u1bc2319c20af4d52eb3cc400d65003d5:hover , .u1bc2319c20af4d52eb3cc400d65003d5:visited , .u1bc2319c20af4d52eb3cc400d65003d5:active { border:0!important; } .u1bc2319c20af4d52eb3cc400d65003d5 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u1bc2319c20af4d52eb3cc400d65003d5 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u1bc2319c20af4d52eb3cc400d65003d5:active , .u1bc2319c20af4d52eb3cc400d65003d5:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u1bc2319c20af4d52eb3cc400d65003d5 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u1bc2319c20af4d52eb3cc400d65003d5 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u1bc2319c20af4d52eb3cc400d65003d5 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u1bc2319c20af4d52eb3cc400d65003d5 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u1bc2319c20af4d52eb3cc400d65003d5:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u1bc2319c20af4d52eb3cc400d65003d5 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u1bc2319c20af4d52eb3cc400d65003d5 .u1bc2319c20af4d52eb3cc400d65003d5-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u1bc2319c20af4d52eb3cc400d65003d5:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Time management EssayOne of many themes in this novel is the search for identity and light. Astrology Essays - Astrology, Astrological Signs, Pseudoscience

Astrology Essays - Astrology, Astrological Signs, Pseudoscience Astrology Have you ever wondered what the signs of the Zodiac means? When we turn on the TV it seems we always see an advertisement on horoscope predictions. People call in and get the predictions they have been looking for. When the newspaper first arrives, some people go to the horoscope section first. They base the entire day or entire week on the report they get. It seems that this phenomenon is something all new, or is it? Astrology has been around since ancient times, even dating back to biblical days. Astrology has a long line of history and a bright future. We will attempt to cover that topic as well as the signs and elements of the Zodiac. The signs of the Zodiac include: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. Astrologers also claim the planets play a role in many key factors. How do these things affect us? We will also look at astrology as a science; a way to predict and control your life and your destiny. Although many people refer to astrology as just being superstitious others say the predictions are not worth the paper they are written on. Many men and women have studied astronomy but we will look at Mother Shipton. What caused this woman to focus her life on the study of astrology? Why did she believe astrology could predict ones character or life? Was she just passing on false information or is the universe interrelated and everything is based on these Zodiac signs? Astrology is a phenomenon that dates back to biblical days. There is an ancient legend, that Adam received the doctrines and mysteries of astrology direct from his Maker and thus by foreknowing that the earth was to be destroyed first by fire and afterwards by water. (Thompson 17) Astrology has played an important role in our civilization. Starting with Adam and even being present in todays society. Different civilizations seemed to be practicing astrology independetely. People noticed the Sun in particular had a change on how crops grew. Many people viewed astronomy and astrology as a similar science until the 1500s. People knew by looking at the sun or what the size of the moon was when to plant crops or even when a baby was going to be born. These early astrologers were searching for their place in life. A place where they fit into the universe. They believed that every component of the universe was linked together and everyone had their own place. Every aspect of ones life was based on the planets and the stars. Even behavior was blamed on the position of the sun! Astrology is widely practiced today. Even today most farmers have a Farmers Almanac. This book tells you when to plant your crops, and many people have success. Some wont even think about planting crops without this information. This is a form of astrology, although many people do not realize it. A popular form of astrology is the Physic Friends Network. This is a 900 number you can call in to see what your sign is and how this affects you. The astrologers on the Physic Friends Network always seem to know what has happened in the past and what will occur in the future. Everyone who says they are astrologers obviously are not and its up to us to use our own judgment to decide. When you hear people talk about signs of the Zodiac you often Wonder what does that mean? Ancient astronomers noted that the sun makes a yearly journey across the celestial sphere, part of which is represented in the picture by the blue band. The ancient astronomers associated dates with the constellations in this narrow belt (which is known as the zodiac), assigning to each constellation of stars the dates when the sun was in the same region of the celestial sphere as the constellation. (Encarta 1999) Each Zodiac sign belongs to four different elements: Fire, Air, Earth and Water. Fire is a positive element; this element focuses on changing energy from one form to another. Air is also a positive element that is associated with the spiritual part of life. Earth on the other hand is a

Chronicle of a Death Foretold Essay Example

Chronicle of a Death Foretold Essay Example Chronicle of a Death Foretold Essay Chronicle of a Death Foretold Essay Essay Topic: Chronicle Of a Death foretold The novella ‘Chronicle of a death foretold’ written by ‘Gabriel Garcia Marquez’ is a highly complex work by him not only because of the plot but also because of the narrative technique which he has used to weave the story. It also becomes very hard for the reader to accept the end of the novella. One of the things the novella gives us is ‘a portrait of a town and its collective psyche’. Town plays a very important role in the novella. In a way, it is the most important character in the novella. This is because it is the sole observer of all the incidents taking place. It is aware of the authenticity of the claims made on Santiago Nasar. It is also aware of the amount of truth spoken by Angela Vicario. All the characters in the novella (including the town) act like a puppet, irrespective to whatever is happening. After reading the novella we come to know that almost all the characters were aware of the brutal fate of Santiago Nasar, but none of them took any measurements to prevent it. The novella was like a scene which was already decided and no character took an initiative to bring any change to it. The platform for enacting that scene was provided by ‘the town’. Let us focus on the collective psyche which was created by the novella. In order to understand this properly, we will focus on the psyche of all the characters. Victoria Guzman and Divina Flor, both women heard that Santiago was going to be killed, but neither was certain whether or not the rumour was true. Moreover, many people on the docks knew that Santiago was going to be killed, but many also thought that he was not in danger anymore. Everyone thought Santiago had been warned that he was going to die. Also, the twins Pedro Vicario and Pablo Vicario told Clothilde Armenta that they were looking for Santiago to kill him. She told her husband, Don Rogelio de la Flor, but he responded that she was being silly. Another instance is when the police officer i

Cooperative Systems (Evolution of Management Class) Essay

Cooperative Systems (Evolution of Management Class) - Essay Example There should be communication links between management and employees. Each and every employee should be regarded as an individual and his individual requirements should be identified and fulfilled in order to motivate him to work jointly with his coworkers for the organizational goals. The organization is a cooperative structure where each employee’s requirements are satisfied. According to Bernard, the management of an organization has the responsibility to make sure that employees are prepared to recognize the organizational goals as their joint goals so that they can support the organization jointly. Employees’ individual motives should be associated with organizational goals. Therefore, employees’ satisfaction and organizational goals are linked to one another and cannot be accessed without each other’s assistance. The managements of the organizations, which are functional nowadays, have to keep the principle of employee satisfaction within their view as it is quite relevant for running successful organizations. The managers are required to keep comprehensible links with their employees so that they are well aware of each other’s requirements.

ETHICAL ISSUES IN LAW ENFORCEMENT - Essay Example The case presented says that on being a police officer and being sent to an accident spot, I discover that my car is involved in the accident. It appears that my spouse is involved in the accident. However, moving closer, I learn to my shock, that my spouse is badly hurt; and her illegitimate lover is also in the car. I am devastated on learning that I have been cheated upon. Both of them lay in badly tattered conditions and are literally on their death beds, begging for help and treatment. Now, both the individuals----my spouse and her lover---are on their death beds and I can save only one, since at least one of them would bleed to death. At this juncture, I need to take the call as to whom I would like to save; since time is a constraint and we could lose them any minute. This is certainly one of the most testing times, in my personal and professional lives intertwined together and I need to prove my mettle in this testing time. My objectivity is questioned at this point, since I need to play the role of a police professional and a husband, who is cheated upon and whose spouse and her lover are on their death beds. Besides this, I also need to act at the nick of the moment and take the decision fast.At this moment of uncertainty and chaos, hurt and confusion, I decide that I would save my spouse. This is because I still love her unconditionally and would not allow any deception or other causes to hamper my love and devotion. However, here, I would have to also retain my objectivity and humanity. Therefore, I hand over my phone to a passerby and ask the person to call up the emergency ambulance. This would ensure the safety of the other individual as well. The passengers-by assure to help me out and cater to his needs. I hand over my walkie-talkie to one of them and rush to the hospital with my spouse. I stay in touch with him, with regard to the progress at the other end. This way, I am certain thta the other individual would recoup soon.Meanwhile, I take up all the necessary steps to ensure that my spouse gets treatment. I rush her to the hospital, and perform small first aid steps on the way. I offer moral support. In spite of her guilt, I try to make her feel safe and secure. The wrong-doings can be sorted out later. However, life is more important at the moment.Meanwhile, I also correspond with individuals and deputy officers at the spot, about the health of the other individual. I see to it that both emerge safe. However, I would definitely confront the individual and m y spouse once they get better and would demand an explanation. Legally, I would take up the necessary action and find out the root cause for the accident. A case would be booked under the law concerned, for instance, speed driving. This would be in accordance to the laws and

Global warming exists Essay Example for Free

Global warming exists Essay The debate over whether global warming is a reality has received contradictory arguments from the various fronts on the global community. Opponents of the phenomenon assert that climate changes from time to time are natural occurrences. On the other side, proponents claim that the world has been experiencing trend of increase in temperatures of the earths near surface atmosphere since early twentieth century. This has particularly been attributed with the onset and increasing industrialization in the global community. Such have the implication that activities by mankind are to be blamed for the issue of climate change in the world. Given the available evidence that the world is experiencing unpredictable climate and weather patterns, global warming is no doubt a reality in the modern society. Causes of global warming According to scientific research findings, global warming is defined as the gradual increase in the temperatures of the earth’s atmosphere near the surface (Johansen, 2002). This has been closely associated with increased emission and accumulation of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide in the atmosphere (Revkin, 2008). These gases are responsible for trapping heat emitted from the earth’s surface and thus increasing the atmospheric temperatures. It is worth noting that greenhouse gases are commonly a byproduct of the production process by industries. As an example to emphasis this claims, mankind activities are estimated to be producing carbon dioxide (which is the major greenhouse gas) at a rate of over 25 billion metric tons annually (Revkin, 2008). In addition, deforestation, which entails cutting down of trees by man has contributed to the increased concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Therefore, although some natural processes such as fossil decay and volcanic eruptions can lead to greenhouse gas emission, mankind kind activities remain the main cause of global warming given the huge amounts of greenhouse gases produced by industries across the globe (Kluger, 2006). Evidence supporting the existence of global warming There are numerous evidences indicating the existence of global warming in the globe. First, the world is evidently witnessing a decline in its mountain ice and glaciers reserves (Kluger, 2006). According to available research findings, the rate Arctic shrinkage is higher than any other time in the history of mankind. Still, the world is experiencing a gradual but real rise in sea levels, a factor which is threatening the submergence of some low laying islands (Johansen, 2002). Such increases are evidently blamed for the increase in the rate of melting of mountain ice and glaciers. Global warming has been blamed for the occurrence of extreme weather conditions. Such include floods, droughts as well as heat waves, which are evident in the world today (Revkin, 2008). It is also claimed that due to global warming, expansion and evaporation of sea waters are high. Just to be appreciated is the fact that such high rates of evaporation of water into the atmosphere leads to increased rate of rain formation along the coastal regions. Such are indeed, the reason behind the frequent flooding witnessed in our coastal regions (Kluger, 2006). Therefore, since no one can refute the evidence of global warming on sea water expansion and increased flooding in the coastal regions, then global warming is a real threat to the sustainable social and economic development of the global community. The world is marked with the problem of unpredictable climate changes. As by the available statistics, the globe is witnessing a changing trend in its wind patterns (Johansen, 2002). It is worth noting that the process of wind formation is dependent on earth surface temperatures which lead to expansion of air. In addition, wind is a crucial factor in influencing the rain patterns across the globe. This is because it acts to carry water vapor from its source to other regions. Based on this reasoning, since wind and rain storms are no doubt a direct result of earth surface temperatures, then global warming must be a real phenomenon. Just to be emphasized here is the fact that such unpredictable wind patterns are responsible for the eminent failure by weather forecasting scientists in giving reliable region specific weather predictions. Therefore, the global temperature swings are responsible for the increasing formation of unpredictable weather patterns across the globe. Another proof in support that global warming is a real phenomenon is the trend of increased incidences of disease outbreaks across the globe (Johansen, 2002). True to the letter, traditionally, diseases were categorized by regions. However, due to climate changes, it is not uncommon it experience traditionally tropical diseases in other regions of the world (Johansen, 2002). According to available evidence, the human community is witnessing an increase in the number of skin cancer diseases. Such have been closely attributed to an increase in the amount of ultraviolet rays reaching the earth surface. It is worth noting here that such increases are a direct result of the evident shrinking of the ozone layer, a phenomenon that is termed as global warming. Conclusion It is clearly established that the world is increasingly witnessing an ever changing trend on its climate. Such are evident from the ever increasing mountain ice and glaciers reserves which lead to expansion of sea waters. This threatens the livelihood of those settled in the low coastal regions. The phenomenon is also blamed for unpredictable wind and rain patterns as well as increased spreading of diseases across the global. Therefore, global warming is a real phenomenon threatening the sustainable existence of the human community. References Johansen, B. (2002). The Global Warming Desk Reference. War? :: essays research papers

Owen’’s poem serves to uncover the lie that "it is sweet and becoming to die for one’’s country." Owen's use of diction, vivid language, and graphic imagery emphasizes his point. The poem describes the fatigue, blindness, evil, obscenity, death, sufferings, and disgust of war. It shows the true life of a soldier, lying low, ill, endlessly trudging through mud with bloody feet, away from and into the pain of gas poisoning of comrades, and away from the injured and dead, but never away from the memories. It ends with a bitter attack on those who see glory in the death of others. The only beauty in this poem is an idea that rest will come. Unfortunately, it is pointed out that the only rest is an undignified death; for those who sleep, sleep restlessly. The ugliness of war is described as low "like old beggars under sacks", diseased "coughing like hags", "blood-shod. All went lame, all blind", exhausting "drunk wi th fatigue", pointless "flound’’ring . . . Dim . . As under a green sea . . . drowning", careless of living or dead "flung" aside, evil "like a devil’’s sick of sin", disgusting like "eyes writhing . . . blood gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs. . . vile, incurable sores", "bitter as the cud", and merciless "on innocent tongues." The comparisons of lines 1, 14, 20, and 23 through 24, describe the soldier as someone the reader can see and war as the disease Owen wants the inexperienced to understand. 1 Bent double, like old beggars under sacks, 14 As under a green sea, I saw him drowning. 20 His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin; This places the reader in the soldier’’s place——drowning, stumbling, and fumbling--and shows the lack of glory in war. These lines tell the reader what a man becomes once he has been to war——less than an admirable human, drowned in evil deeds, and emotionless. Lines 23 and 24 give war a character. 23 Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud 24 Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,-- They create a tangible entity for the reader. They show the truth of the creature of war——cancerous, bitter, incurable——and its eternal, undignified effect on the innocent. Owen uses plural pronouns and the past tense to describe what cannot be undone. He uses "we" and "our" to include the reader as part of the ill-equipped troops——as tired marchers and witnesses to death and pain. Endless Love For My Family Essay

Someone once said, â€Å"Love is the answer everyone seeks. Love is the language every heart speaks.† Funny isn’t it? Although every country, every city, every individual is so completely and utterly different in thousands of ways, we all have one common desire.
